I cannot remember a day in my life without what the dictionary deems "a domestic animal kept for companionship and pleasure" - my dog. Yes, companionship and yes, pleasure, but my four legged family members have taught me so many life lessons, most of which I attempt, but have never quite mastered like my pets understand and accomplish without thought.
Trust. Look into their eyes - I see love and I see trust.
Love without condition. That's hard for us humans, but seems to come so naturally to our dogs. I'm still working on this one.
Play often, really play!!!! And when you are tired of playing, lay in the sun and enjoy your naps.
Drink lots and lots of water. Eat well when you are hungry.
Wag a little more and bark a little less.
Live totally for and in the moment. Life is short - enjoy the ride!!!!
Don't hold grudges, forgive quickly even if you can't forget.
Never never ever give up!
There are many many more lessons I've learned and many more I work to master. I am thinking that these "pets" of ours are our masters, not the other way around, if we do it right.
Over the years, I have painted hundreds of pet portraits, most of them being dogs. All of them being special dogs to loving owners that are thankful to have them in their lives. If you are one of these people, I suggest you take photos, good photos, as you never know when you may want a portrait of your loved one. You will never regret it -
